Now that Karabiner Elements allows for complex modifications, I decided to try to map the physical keys on the MacBook Pro keyboard to work in the same way. Fn + a number gives you the corresponding Function key. Until the new machine arrives it is back to the Mid-2012 Mac Mini dual-core 2.5GHz i5. Pressing the key by itself gives you Esc, pressing with Shift gives you Tilde, and pressing with Fn gives you Grave. I'm also certain that they didn't bother because doing so would have made the base model 13' Pro with its single fan and 8th Gen chipset a not-so-good buy in comparison due to overall capability. I'm absolutely certain that if the Air had proper cooling it would have performed just fine. The 4 port model has 10th Gen chips, super-fast RAM, and two fans that actually have heat pipes connected unlike on the Air. The Twelve South stand will sit next to a Dell 27' 256ox1440 monitor so logging on one screen and radio on the other. The Air I sent back shipped from Shenzen on Monday and was at my front door on Thursday. I suspect that not having to guess which way is up will rub off on you.My new 13' MBP with the 4 ports ships on or about 5/20. If you need to connect USB-A devices to your USB-C only Mac then buy a few $8 adapters.

While the speed bumped up every few years over USB-A it was always one step behind things like FireWire, SATA, Thunderbolt, Ethernet, or even a quality old school serial port. There's only 5 watts, and later 12 watts, of power throughput. There's no tactile indication on which way is up, at least none that are standard.

When pressed into use as an all purpose power and data connector for portable devices it fails. USB-A was a great idea for it's original purpose, that was to plug in keyboards, mice, printers, scanners, and other PC peripherals that don't move all that much. I put USB-C expansion cards in my Windows and Linux tower PCs so I could avoid the hassle of USB-A on them too. It meant I never again had to flip over the USB-A connector three or four times to get it plugged in. I did that so I could just leave the adapter with the device and just pretend it didn't even have a USB-A connector.

That was overkill because I don't use even half that number of devices regularly with my MacBook. I got a dozen USB-A to USB-C adapters for about $80. Maybe I won't nurse this one to the end of its useful lifeД¬lick to expand.I don't understand this complaint.

It works great in the shack with a big monitor, in the rover, and for any /P setup. In the final analysis I'm happy with this setup. Maybe this is a Paralles issue? I even have it permanently assigned to Windows 10. In Bootcamp/W10 or using dogparkSDR it works instantly. Also, when checking the boxes to reenable the FlexControl, it does not power up for up to 10 seconds.

The FlexControl disconnects every time the computer sleeps. The Bootcamp partition did not migrate from my old Mini and I've not set up a new one so I don't know about the 'native' performance of the radio stuff in Win10.Д¤. To get the F keys to display permantenlty for ham radio use you just go into settings and set the F keys as always on.ДЈ. I thought that this might be a problem but not having a physical key was fine. Otherwise, when you turn charging power on/off as happens out roving, all of the USB things disconnect creating a mess.Дў. DO NOT connect power to the hub but rather directly to the computer. Fresh off the June VHF Contest rove, the MBP ran flawlessly using an Anker Hub to connect the K3, Signalink, and WinKeyerUSB.ДЎ. This setup has been used in the shack with a VAVA hub to handle Ethernet, HDMI to a 2560x144o monitor, and my FlexControl Knob. Skookum Logger also works great a native OS solution.

It has enough horsepower to run any combination of logging/control software in Win10/Parallels without the fans noticeably running or the bottom case getting too warm. I've had my 2020 MacBook Pro 13' with four ports for about a month now and am totally pleased.
